SERVPRO of Twin Falls & Jerome Countiesresponds to storm damage emergencies every year in Kimberly. Here is some information from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety to help you determine how much the ice and snow on your roof weighs:
Ice:One inch of ice equals one foot of fresh snow.
Fresh snow: Ten to twelve inches of new snow equals one inch of water or about five pounds per square foot of roof space, so you could have up to four feet of new snow before the roof becomes stressed.
Packed snow: Three to five inches of old snow is equal to one inch of water, or about five pounds per square foot of roof space, so anything more than two feet of old snow could be too much for your roof to handle.
- Total accumulated weight:Two feet of old snow and two feet of new snow could weigh as much as sixty pounds per square foot of roof space, which is beyond most roofs’ typical snow load capacity.
